In his TED talk, Mitra explains that while the current education system is not broken, it is outdated. He believes that technology has made schools less necessary for learning, as we now have various tools that can help us succeed. To prove his point, Mitra conducted a fascinating experiment with low-income Indian children called the "hole in the wall". He gave them a computer and left them to discover how to use it on their own. The experiment demonstrated that technology can provide us with very positive results and help us learn. With the help of technology, we can almost do everything by ourselves. It's a surprising change that brings a new era of learning to us.
I recently had the opportunity to work with second-grade students who were assigned a science project to investigate their favorite animal. The students were required to research and gather information related to their animal's eating habits, behavior, habitat, and other essential details. I provided them with access to a computer to conduct their research, and I was amazed by the quality of the projects they produced. The students learned a great deal, and their projects contained valuable information. They went into great depth with their research and exceeded expectations.
I enjoy giving children the opportunity to explore the internet and find answers by themselves. I find Google and various applications that the school district uses with Classlink, like XtraMath, Prodigy, Istation, Seesaw, ABCya and Starfall, to be very helpful in aiding children to learn mathematics and reading. Children are already familiar with these tools and have established routines for their daily use.
As an experienced educator, I have learned that understanding the needs, strengths, and weaknesses of our students is crucial in selecting the appropriate technological tools to enhance classroom learning. This is something I have tested over the years and found to be effective.
